Do I need to use "stationery," or could my pre-composed templates be simple black & white text messages?

You do not need to use stationery or any other kind of fancy HTML formatting.  If you prefer to create and post plain black & white text messages (just simple HTML) that will work just fine.

Note: Even with these simple black & white text messages you'll be able to insert the mail merge code to add personalization for your users.
