The engine and propeller combination is balanced in concert with each other. A small vibration sensor (called an accelerometer) is mounted on the engine close to the propeller. A tachometer sensor is also mounted at the front of the aircraft and a reflective piece of tape is adhered to the rear of one of the propeller blades. The tachometer is aligned with the tape to ensure that with each rotation of the propeller the tachometer pickup receives a signal from the reflective tape. Both the tachometer and the vibration sensor are attached to a handheld, purpose built computer. After programming the computer with the type of aircraft and the horsepower rating of the engine, the engine is run. The computer compares the amount of vibration signal (expressed in inches per second, or IPS) from the accelerometer to the tachometer signal and computes how much weight is required, and where it should be installed, to reduce the vibration level. Typically it takes three runs and three changes of the amount and location of the weight installed to reduce the vibration to the lowest possible value. We can achieve a value of less then 0.1 IPS with about 0.04 IPS being the average. We have seen as high as 0.65 IPS on the initial run.
