Editing Templates Online

Step 1:  Using the library administrator control panel, navigate to an existing template that you’d like to edit and click EDIT:

Step 2 (Note the important caveats listed in red beneath the graphic illustration):  An edit screen will appear.  The upper portion of this screen will allow you to make any changes you want to the template name, description, subject line and special posting instructions.

The lower portion of the screen will bring up an online HTML editor that will display the template itself.  The graphic below illustrates both portions of this screen:

Clicking the UPDATE button at the bottom will save any of the changes you’ve made.

IMPORTANT CAVEATS – Please take note of this information:  The online HTML editor should be used sparingly and with caution, as it currently has some flaws.  We suggest the following:

·        First, either send yourself a copy of the template, or copy and paste the template’s text to a text editor.  This is a safeguard in case the online editing you do winds up damaging the HTML formatting of the existing template.  This step ensures that you’ll be able to fairly easily recreate the template and re-post it if necessary.

·        Minor changes to the text, such as correcting a spelling or punctuation error, changing a price or date, are the kind of edits that are appropriate.

·        Any kind of special formatting such as applying indentation or bullet points is probably unwise.

·        If you begin typing a new paragraph and the font style is different, you may be able to pick up the existing font style by clicking into the end of an existing paragraph, say just before the period, typing a new period, pressing the return key to begin your new paragraph.  This should work to carry the font style forward for you.

·        If you can see something visually wrong with the editing you’ve done, or if you notice the cursor move outside of the expected margin of the text, do not click the UPDATE button.  Once the UPDATE button is clicked your changes are saved and there is no going back.

Step 3 – Reviewing your changes:  After clicking the UPDATE button to save your changes you’ll be presented with an opportunity to review your changes:

If you used the online HTML editor to change the template itself, click the PREVIEW HTML option to see the actual template in its modified form:

If there are any significant problems with the formatting of the template after editing it, it will probably make the most sense to re-post it from scratch.

We will continue to work on improving the reliability of this functionality, as we recognize that it can provide you with a significant time savings.
